Blackjack Rules

Blackjack or 21 is the most popular casino table game in the world, and it’s easy to see why. It’s fast-paced, you can learn the ropes quickly, and offers players some of the best odds available. The basic premise of the game is relatively simple; a player has to come as close to 21 without going over, while still having a hand higher than the dealer. Otherwise, the player “busts” and the dealer wins.

  • Kings, Queens, and Jacks are all valued at 10, while numbered cards are scored according to their value.
  • An Ace is valued at 1 or 11. If your hand contains an Ace with a value of 1, it’s called a “soft” position.
  • You start by placing your wager. Then, the dealer deals out two cards for the player and two cards for himself. The dealer’s second card is not shown to anyone and is known as the “hole” card. In this case, you don’t know how much the dealer has until the end of the game.
  • Once you look at your own cards, you have the option to make one of the five basic moves: Hit, Stand, Double Down, Split and Surrender.
  • “Hit” means to take another card. You can keep hitting as long as you want, as long as the total value of your hand doesn’t exceed 21.
  • You can “Stand” if you don’t want to take another card. It’s a good idea to stand if you’re really close to 21, but this depends on the dealer’s face up card.
  • Players may “Double Down” with any two-card hand. They do so by making a second bet equal to their initial bet. The player then receives one additional card, and then forced to stand.
  • If you’re dealt a pair or two cards of equal value, you can “Split” it into two hands. You’ll be asked to draw up another card for each hand and place a new bet on your second hand.
  • If the dealer’s up and the chances of you pulling out a win are slim, you have the option to “Surrender.” If you surrender, you’ll get 50% of your initial bet back.
